Sardarji Barah Baj Gaye

India is in a very bad situation rt now 😐 138/5. I knew that playing on last day would b 2 difficult. Hopefully Sachin n Karthik save the day. Apart from the national pride, I have another reason that I want India to draw today. I have had a bet with someone :(

Well, there is nothing much I can do about the match.

I read a post full of joke on Sardars on Manpreet’s blog. He is a sikh himself and I have had other frnds who are sikh but crack jokes on themselves :p. Its just fun to crack jokes about each other and I don’t even mind jokes on hindus etc… The most common jokes about Sardars are barah baje wale jokes. I got an email from an ex-collegemate, who is ofcourse a sikh by religion. It explained the origin of “barah baj gaye.” I had heard that from someone when I was studying in Punjab, but now I got it typed so it is easy for me to put it on my blog 😉

Here is the exact copy of the email.

Narration of some anonymous person :

I was standing at jalandhar station when my attention went towards a Sikh youth standing near me wearing a Black turban having a long beard and wearing a kirpan over his shirt looking similar to a terrorist. After a while, one local train arrived, which was totally packed. The Sikh youth tried to alight the train but failed to do so. Just then a voice was heard from the back coach ‘Sardarji Barah Baj gaye’ The Sikh youth looked over at that voice maker who was a young mischievous type of person and instead of showing any anger made a smile towards him. The smile made was so enigmatic that it seemed as if some type of truth lies behind it.

Not able to resist my temptation, I walked towards him and asked why did he smile at that person who teased him. The Sikh youth replied, ‘He was not teasing me but was asking for my Help’. I was surprised with these words and he told me that there was a big history behind that which one should know.

I was eager to know the History and the Sikh youth narrated: During 17th Century, when Hindustan was ruled by Mughals, all the Hindu people were humiliated and were treated like animals. Mughals treated the Hindu women as there own property and were forcing all Hindus to accept Islam and even used to kill the people if they were refusing to accept. At that time, Nadir Shah raided Delhi in the year 1739 and looted Hindustan and was carrying lot of Hindustan treasures and nearly 2200 Hindu women along with him.

The news spread like a fire and was heard by Sardar Jassa Singh who was the Commander of the Sikh army at that time . He decided to attack Nadir Shah’s Kafila on the same midnight. He did so and rescued all the Hindu women and they were safely sent to their homes. It didn’t happen only once but thereafter whenever any Abdaalis or Iranis had attacked and looted Hindustan and were trying to carry the treasures and Hindu women along with them for selling them in Abdal markets, the Sikh army although fewer in numbers but were brave hearted and attacked them at midnight,12 O’clock and rescued women. After that time when there occurred a similar incidence, people started to contact the Sikh army for their help and Sikhs used to attack the raider’s at Midnight, 12 O’clock. It continued and became a known fact that at midnight, nearly at 12 O’clock, it is very difficult to fight against Sikhs as the Sikhs get some Extra Power to save Religion,Nation and Humanity. Nobody can fight and win against them at midnight; this continues till now.

Nowadays, these “smart people” and some Sikh enemies who are afraid of Sikhs, have spread these words that at 12 O’clock, the Sikhs go out of their senses. This historic fact was the reason which made me smile over that person as I thought that his Mother or Sister would be in trouble and wants my help and was reminding me by saying off ‘Sardarji Barah Baj Gaye’

Plz do forward this mail to all ur friends so they can know about sikh history & its a humble appeal PLEASE dont make fun of RELIGIONS ! as every religion is as pure as urs

Gaurav – I am a Sikh myself…but I don’t think this story is true. I agree with all the fights that Sikhs did and saved many Hindu women, etc- but I don’t think this story is why the ’12 baje’ thing started. It’s just one of those jokes which has no origin. I think it came more from the saying…’tere chehre pe kyoon bara baje hue hain”. Oh well…whatever the case may be – most of these jokes are hilarious and crack me down. Infact lately, it’s only the ‘sardar’ jokes that make me laugh:)

Every single community in India is the butt of some jokes or the other. Wait a minute – every single community in the WORLD is.
Although it is very obvious that nobody wants to hurt Sikh sentiments with these jokes, one should stop if s/he is crossing the line, and I have never heard of a case where they have not stopped. It defeats the very purpose of humour.
Btw, Marwari jokes are spreading like wildfire these days, and they are much funnier than Sikh jokes, and Marwaris do not take them seriously either.
Randhir, although I deeply admire your passion towards our religion, I think there are some pro-Khalistan people in your family, and only then can you abuse your racially identical brothers AND ANCESTORS in the filthy way that you do.
Our contribution to the Indian freedom struggle has been legendary, but we are a warrior clan, and we never ‘saved the Hindus’ so that we could rub it in their face. That is not what a warrior does, it is something a mercenary does, and I assume you come from such a lineage, divorced from pure Sikhism.
It is people like Randhir that are, sadly, converting our Sikhism into the NEW ISLAM. Bhindranwale caused the entire problem by hiding in the golden temple – no army would have stormed Harmandir Sahib had he been man enough to protect the holy ground by fighting miles away from there. If you assassinate the head of a country, of course they will raid your community (innocents included)! Please look up the ANTI-BRAHMIN RIOTS and anti-maratha riots that followed M. Gandhi’s assassination by a RSS extremist.
Please, Sikhs in the west have enough trouble being labelled as Jehadis because of our appearence, and we do not need people like Bhindranwale, Ripudaman Malik, Beant Singh, and Randhir to support that image. They are not Sikhs, and you can only imagine what our Gurus would have felt had they read Randhir’s post.

Anyhow, if any Sikh brothers are reading this, please try not to become an extremist and support the extinction of our race. By extinciton I mean Islamization. We are as Indian as anyone in India, and there is no way or need to deny it.

Nice words Randeep. Being a muslim sometimes i also feel the same pain as urs. People like Randhir are present in every religion and they are far away from the basics of their religion. And basicallly these are the folks which get trapped into the hands of people who use them for false motives (like usage of muslim youth in Kashmir). I request everybody to understand your religion thoughrouly, then communal hormony will automatically come among us. Because its not the religion who commits crime but the so called followers, who ruin the image.

Very great words syed and Randeep. I’m a Hindu living in America. We also have our share of terrorists, and those who commited those terrible crimes in 2002, 1993, 1984, and the RSS. The Khalistani, RSS, or the terrorists in Kashmir don’t represent our religions. We’re all Indian. We all may pray in a different way, we may talk in different langauges, but we’re all Indian. And we can all come together to form a better India, and get rid of the religious tensions that plague us still.

12 baj gaye as in the roman time kept by pre british indians ? very believable

  • Domailme_2000

lun katwa ke mulla ban jaaa bc…sardar akhoonaa aaa …mar jaa dubb ke

  • ATS

With all due respect, the story just sounds like a sad attempt at defending one’s faith.

Karn has made a very good point in this regard. Pre-British Indians cannot be conceived to have kept a 24 hour AM/PM time by any stretch of imagination. This story is therefore an urban legend and hoax at the best.

Though, it goes without saying that idiots making stupid joke with religious undertones are just that, idiots, and to be ignored.

  • Dinesh

    Hi Gaurav,
Iam Dinesh From chennai Thanks for the information about Sikh it was quite interesting.I like Sikh people very much because of their turban and brave looks. thank you.

  • Kiran

In response to Karn and ATS, the British were in India around 1600 (other Europeans were there before that), and the 12-hour clock has been in common use in Europe since the 16th century (according to Wikipedia). So the possibility of referring to late night as 12 O’clock in the mid to late 18th Century is there.
