India is under outsourcing boom. Inspite of government change and a rulling coalition, Indian economy is growing at a tremendous rate. There is a lot of hiring going on right now. Fresh grads from colleges are getting good salaries, which are more than enough to support themselves (may be not their families). Due to all this the buying power of youth is increasing and a lot of companies are making money out of it. Evere wondered why most of the Ads and commercials target youngsters? Its because they (not all, but most) buy what they like and aren’t sensible enough to choose what is right and what is wrong for them. We are prospering.
We are definetly prospering economically but what about other aspects? Indian culture is gradually dimnishing away from big cities. People are forgetting traditions, nuclear families are on rise, pre-marital sex isn’t a taboo anymore for a lot of people…etc.
What has happened to Indian children? asks Poonam of www.neerajpoonam.com - I believe that it is a residue (side effect) of the changing society. Everything has a price.
Globalization is good for India as it has opened a lot of opportunities for Indians. Now by a click of a mouse you can easily get an outsourcing contract from a US firm and happily live ever after, but with the same click of the mouse your child can access and download alien culture into himself.
These days most of the kids have become americanized. A lot of people think that all Indian things are simply BS and things are cool. Its true that some Indian things are of lower quality than intl. standards, but that doesn’t mean that everything Indian “sucks”. A lot of people get fascinated by western culture. They think “amrika mein to bahut azadi hai”, but they don’t know that that freedom has a cost. Cost of stress, depression. Its true that a lot of American adults (18 yrs old) don’t live with their parents, they live with their partners and do whatever they like. But they have to earn their own bread and butter at the age of 18, when most of Indian kids are still enjoying their school/college life with parent’s money.
A couple of days ago I heard about an incident that took place in Delhi. It involves 2 11th class kids. It is regarding a porn video shot by 2 students of DPS RK Puram (I am an ex-dipsite but not RKP) in “compromising positions”. There are a lot of rumors about the whole incident. Principal Shyama Chona has expelled the students. But I fail to understand why?
According to me, they didn’t do anything wrong, which would qualify them for an expulsion. What they did was morally/ socially wrong but nothing acadmically or anything related to school.
Acc. to this article @ The Telegraph,
Two Class XI students had sex on their school premises
which is so very much not true.
Moreover the article has a quote
“I really feel sad for the girl. Maybe she was drunk or doped when it was happening. Or maybe she just got into bad company,” said a student.
which isn’t true either. She was fully aware of wat she was doing.
The article also claims
The school has put up a notice warning parents and students against bringing mobile phones. Anyone caught with a cellphone on the premises will face confiscation and a Rs 1,000 penalty.
(acc. to sify and indiatimes it is 2000)
Ok….fine students won’t bring a cellphone to the school, what about a digital camera? there isn’t a fine on that. If the school really wants to eradicate the problem or avoid such a situation, then they shouldn’t use such lame tactics.
If they haven’t done anything in the school premisis and the school isn’t invloved in any way (except for the fact that they were studying there) then DPS RKP has no authority to expel them, though their parents can beat them to death.
Acc. to Indiatimes, the boy was pissed off as the girl dumped him and thus he sold the video, which had been filmed before their break up, to his batchmates @ Rs. 100
The incident had happened a little over a month ago, when two eleventh standard students of DPS RK Puram, a top south Delhi school, had filmed their sex act on the boy’s mobile phone “just for kicks”.
Note that “just for kicks” is refered to the filming of the sexual act and not the sexual act itself.
I am not quiet convinced with the article (dunno the truth though). If she wasn’t in such a deep relationship with the boy then why would she let him record the act, where he can’t even be seen?
Another article which makes little bit of more sense to me is at Sify. Acc. to this article
Reportedly, the incident occured about a month ago when a girl and a boy, both students of Class 11, got together and filmed themselves in a compromising position. Their subsequent claim to fame is all of 2.37 mins.
The film was then circulated among fellow batchmates in the school through MMS for fun. Fellow students claim the girl wanted to be ‘cool’ and gain some instant popularity. Unfortunately for them, the film reached the Principal who expelled the two.
Moreover it claims that
It is being said that on being questioned by the Principal, both students did not appear to be ashamed of what they had done. In fact, the girl even reportedly retorted, “Who doesn’t do it? Haven’t you done it?” The boy is equally nonchalant about what he had done, according to his peers.
Acc. to the article the girl “was a merit-lister - she was part of the Class XI `super ability section’ where only above 90 percent scorers find their way.” If she is an excellent student then her expulsion should be based on her academic performance and not due to the fact that she did “something” at a place other than her school.
Is it just Indian kids who do this? And the answer is no
A not so old case of a 15 year old boy raping his mother was witnessed in Britain. I think it would be the worst crime ethically/morally and socially. According to me there can be no bigger crime than this.
There are numerous other cases where teenagers indulge in these kinds of activities.
Does school kids in US indulge in activities like these? And the answer is yes.
A few days ago I was reading a discussion on a News article about how 5 teenage school girls forced their claasmate to become a prostitute, so that those girls can pay their cellphone bill and have some “pocket money”. In the course of discussion I found this
In the states, I teach in a very diverse inner city school. I have heard about students performing oral sex for money in the basement of our high school. I have heard about under age prostitutes working the streets (usually after tehy dropped out). I have had students who slept around with significantly older men so they could have things. I also heard about three 5th graders who made it their goal to sleep with every boy in their fifth grade class. They nearly succeeded(27 boys out of 38), but got caught in the restroom with two boys while on a school field trip.
If that stuff was happening in my town, in my school ditrict, then i assure you that it is happening everywhere, but maybe just not all the time!
All these crimes/ incidents reflect that they are omni-potent and definetly have evolved from the rapid changes in the way of living and the society in general. These kind of incidents are bound to happen as the society takes a new face, but its upto us (the society) to decide if we are ready to pay the price? The things will keep happening and the societies will mold themselves accordingly. Just as Love Marriges in India were a complete no-no a few decades ago. This is the theory of evolution by Darwin.

4indian youth is confused bunch as far as sex is concerned. there is always conflict of indian culture & western openness in their minds. they are leading a dual confused personality. as far as sex education is concern ” Indian still learn their Ist lesson of sex from Dogs & Cows” and inact the same in their life.”

5I do agree with you pramod. I think the reason behind being confused is the restrictions that our society has imposed on the kids or even adults.
When a child reaches puberty biologically he/she has the urge to know more about the human body and the opposite sex. In India these thoughts are supressed and parents as well as school preaches that one should not have these kind of thoughts….. when the kids don’t get an answer from their school or parents (who they trust the most) then they try to explore themselves. They look at magz, sites, talk to friends and thus get all the knowledge. Sometimes they get accurate information and at other times its just a peice of fiction of someone’s mind.
If parents and/or school provide all the answers to the inquisitive kids….then they wouldn’t be looking for the answers elsewhere. Its a human tendency to explore and find out something which is being hidden by others….so its the society which needs an overall makeup!

7Gaurav, this was a fairly insightful entry. It’s nice to see someone not either being hysterical or simply condemning the two students involved in the DPS RK Puram “sex scandal.” There is nothing to explain or explain away here — it’s just two young people who made a mistake. Society (Hindustani or otherwise) will not crumble as a result.
However, I think you’ve done a disservice to American schools by quoting an unnamed source who cited rampant sex in American schools. If you can’t provide a link to substantiate the story of the 5th-graders sleeping with all their classmates, then I would suggest it is untrue or at the very least embellished. With today’s culture of “zero tolerance” in American schools, it defies reason that a trio of prepubescent schoolgirls could sleep with even ONE boy without the entire school knowing about it. I searched and could find no mention of this story, not even on urban legend websites.
Similarly, the claims of “sex for money in the basement” have been going on in various forms for decades. Nearly everyone in America has heard of a basement bathroom at a library or school (or other public facility like a museum) where sex is available, either for a fee or free (usually homosexual in the latter case.) Given American society’s legal disapproval of sex in public places, it is likely that most of these stories are simply false.
This is not to say that teenage Americans aren’t having sex. There was a scandal in (I believe) 1996 about a large group of high-school students in Conyers, Georgia who began developing symptoms from a sexually transmitted disease. The local health department made a chart of the students’ various admitted sex partners that looked more like a diagram belonging to a software deployment than one documenting human relationships. But none of these encounters occurred in a school. All the reported events took place at their parents’ homes, usually while the parents were away or asleep. PBS-TV made a documentary about these events that aired on the programme “Frontline.”
So to summarize, I’d say that there is lots of sex happening in America, but the idea that young girls are prostituting themselves in subterranean basements is just a silly notion postulated by easily-titillated adults who probably don’t get enough sex themselves. One doesn’t need to resort to fantasy to realize that there is plenty of sex happening all around us amongst the underaged, and it will continue to happen until there are no more young people who want to explore, be reckless, and make their own mistakes.

8Thanks ekaansh.
Thanks for expressing your views Paul. I don’t have any experience or interaction with American High Schools as I did my schooling in India. I just qouted someone, who I believed said the truth (I have no proof though.) The person is not unnamed, but th forum’s links can’t point to an individual posts so checkout the link provided with the qoute and scroll down to 21st post.
Its possible that the info provided by the person isn’t 100% correct or may be he/she got that from unreliable sources. To me, it doesn’t matter where the activities are held, be it school or college or their parent’s homes, but the fact is that American teens are getting drugs very easily.
In California, getting an ID for an underage is very easy, you can get that as low as $20.00 (may be they are on sale on Christmas :P). Once again, I haven’t got a fake ID but I know a guy who got his gf a fake ID for 20 bucks and she was 18 at that time.
Its possible that American High Schools aren’t that bad as described by that person. US High school students do get Sex Edu. but still “U.S. teenagers have one of the highest pregnancy rates in the western world — twice as high as rates found in England, New Zealand, and Canada” Check it out here.
I also happen to get this story from Google. It is not from US but UK.

Later, according to the student, Stroud tried to convince her to have sex with him, but she declined. She also added that Stroud introduced her to Terrell Ellis, a Lehman graduate and self-described pimp, who suggested that the student could make a lot of money meeting men, the report stated. http://www.bxtimes.com/news/2004/1223/Front_Page/001.html

Many are outraged by the arrest of the schoolboy, who, along with the girl, attended one of the capital’s best known private schools, The Delhi Public School. “What are we trying to say here?” asked Dutt. “What do we believe is wrong? Was it that he had sex? Was it that he sent out the clip? Which part is the disturbing part?

Based on that number, Franzini and her team calculated Texas should expect 8,265 additional teen pregnancies, 5,372 teen births and 1,654 abortions. The economic impact could amount to $43.6 million per year in additional public health care costs. That figure does not take into account thousands of additional cases of sexually transmitted diseases in adolescents. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/editorial/2962661

12Thanks for visiting my blog Anoop. I don’t think that Child Marriage is a great idea. Marriage and a relationship are 2 different things. Marriage brings in a lot of responsibilities with it.

13Hi. I study in DPS RKP, and I used to study there also when the MMS thing happened. It was not in school premises and the school has no right to expel the students. It’s true that the girl was brilliant academically because I’ve got my sources within the school. But, sex in school is not a new thing and the papers are just making a big deal about it because this is the first time it was caught. Loads of sex still happens in our school, in fact even Grade 6 people indulge in such activities, it’s not something new and it’s no big deal. I study in the same school so I know, it happens all the time.
