I don’t know what’s up with major Indian sites claiming to be web 2.0 and stuff with real bad design. I am not just talking about the color scheme or design in general, but the whole usability aspect. Be it TOI, Rediff or naukri all of them have a bunch of popups, tons of banner ads and non-existent user driven design. I have heard from a lot of people living in India that it is hard to find a good designer there. Is finding good designers a big problem in India? Would love to hear what people know/believe.
Slideshare.net, a great product comes from a company Uzanto which has operations in India and USA. I really liked their simple design. Ofcourse their core audience is not Indians, but it seems like they have Indian designers working on the site.
Love slideshare’s server naming scheme ![]()

1Yes, we do have both designers and developers working in India. Design happens both in US and India.
In general I don’t think bad design on Indian sites is because there aren’t good designers in India. I think it is more reflective of what the business prioritizes.

2I am agreed with rashmis wording, it is not because of bad designers, it is because website is free and no one is paying for the services like Rediff, yahoo mail account. so how they can make money …. by adds and pops only….as simple as that.

3Rashmi and Ravindra,
Thanks for the comment. I agree that the businesses do not see a slick design as a priority.
I do not agree with Ravindra, giving free does not mean adding pop ups. There are several ways to monetize the traffic with a good design.
They can still embed advertising in content for a well designed site rather than embeding content in the advertising.

4Is this a discussion about meraaindiatube.com? I wonder what standard is used to determine which site design is good or bad. Good design is a relative term and any one has the right to air their views. They could be wrong, they could be right. The question is, what is a good website design?
